Meditating on the intertwining of nature and culture through systems of
agriculture, language and mass production, Microliths draws attention to
the mystical power of diminuitive gestures and minimal intervention in
art.
I have amassed a collection of stones from nectarines, peaches and other fruit, from beachcombing and eating amongst friends since allergies prevent me from consuming the fruit myself. Following a process of drying and halving, each stone is lightly sanded to reveal an internal pattern that is light in tone and unpredictably shaped.
For Remember Nature at Castlefield Gallery New Art Spaces, Chester, I installed 27 of these stones - one for each letter of the alphabet including ‘&’ - throughout the gallery in intimate spaces such as corners and ceilings away from the main walls and out of traditional eye level, which once noticed are not forgotten.
